In 2021, the French NS-IBTS Q1 survey was conducted as part of the International Bottom Trawl Survey program carried out by main countries bordering the North Sea in order to assess abundance and stocks distribution, independently of commercial fisheries data. The first target of the NS-IBTS Q1 survey is to provide a diagnosis on the main commercial fish species by estimating their abundance per age. A standardized protocol is rigorously applied by all participants. The R/V Thalassa sampled the eastern part of the Channel and southern North Sea (until 56° N) from 19th January to 9th February 2021. During daily time, 56 hauls, lasting 30 minutes, have been carried out with a GOV bottom trawl. A total of 82 fish species have been collected, determined and... |

Cod (Gadus morhua, L.), whiting (Merlangius merlangus, L.), saithe (Pollachius virens, L.), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus, L.), sole (Solea vulgaris, L.) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa, L.) make up the main demersal stocks under quota which concern the French fishery in North Sea and Eastern English Channel. The diagnosis on the state of stocks are set up at the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Recommendations which result from the analyses are proposed to the European Union. Most of the stocks are close or outside their safe biological limits. Several reasons account for that such as the high fishing mortality rates and mixed fisheries on species with diverse biological characteristics. Consequently, more and more young... |

The experimental design of the capture field area of baited whelk-pots involves, as a controlled factor, four different spacings between pots (6, 12, 24 and 36m), randomly distributed along a ground line. This spectrum of values is sufficiently broad to preclude overlap of capturing fields of sorne pots. Taking account of the patterns of the M2 tidal currents in the area studied, an ellipse was chosen as a geometrical model of the shape of the capture field. Semimajor and semiminor axes were estimated by least squares, the expected catch per pot being defined as a decreasing function of the area of overlap with adjacent capture fields. · Experimental fishing of Buccinum undatum L. was carried out in the Channel Isles region (Western Channel), and provided... |

In my work, which is summarised in this paper for obtaining accreditation to supervise research (the HDR), I addressed three areas: i) statistical methods of estimating the density of living resources, ii) mathematical models of population dynamics for estimating the abundance of marine populations and iii) methods for detecting temporal changes in the status of exploited populations. My work has focused on: i) Many studies of the observability of fish by trawling and by video and the development of stochastic models to better assess local fish densities. ii) Development of models without commercial catches, using Bayesian and frequentist approaches; the study of multi-specific relationships and the proposal for a threshold predator-prey model. iii)... |

The simple surplus production model introduced is called Local Surplus Production Model (LSPM) because its only assumption is that the mean surplus production remains constant during a short period of years previous to the date of assessment. Its application requires only a short series (3-4 years) of values of an abundance index proportional to the mean real abundance of the resource. The model parameters estimate is performed in a Bayesian context using the SIR (Sampling Importance Resampling Algorithm) algorithm. Simple risk criteria to assess the Maximum Biologically Acceptable Catch and the risks associated to each hypothetical catch level considered are proposed. Application of the model to the whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) resource is... |

Pope's Cohorts Analysis was modified to extend its application to a wider range of natural mortality, M and fishing mortality, F rate values. The modified method maintains the simplicity of the one established by Pope and does not require to resolve any non lineal equation in each cohort reconstruction process. The relative errors obtained when estimating the number of individuals per age (maximum and mean in absolute value) showed acceptable levels within the five domains (M and F pairs of values) analyzed in this work. The new method can be adapted to a particular situation (M and F values range) simply solving an optimization problem (minimization of the maximum relative error absolute value) easily achieved using a calculation sheet or considering the... |
